In 1513, Ponce de Leon sailed
the waters in and around the inlet, which now
bears his name.
In 1821, Florida was ceded to the United
States by Spain.
The then called Mosquito Inlet was the
sight for live oak lumbering.
This was the same type of wood used in the
planks of “Old Ironsides”.
The most famous landmark on
the inlet is the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse,
which has greatly contributed to the history of
Ponce Inlet.
The lighthouse was first lighted in 1887
with a kerosene lamp that could be seen 20 miles
out to sea. In
1909 the old lamp was replaced with an
incandescent oil vapor lamp.
In 1928 Mosquito Inlet was officially
changed to Ponce de Leon Inlet.
A few years later in 1933, the tower light
became electric with a 500-watt lamp.
In 1963, the town of Ponce
Inlet was incorporated and the first town council
was sworn in at the lighthouse. In 1964, the town leased the lighthouse property for their
Town Hall from the U.S. government for the cost of
a $1.00 per year.
In 1972, a non-profit organization was
formed to help the town restore and manage the
lighthouse. In
1982, the tower balcony was restored. The light
was returned to active service and the three
keepers’ dwellings were turned into museums.
Today, the 7 square mile town
of Ponce Inlet is prized for its beautiful beaches
and relaxing lifestyle.
Volusia County manages the beaches and the
park surrounding Ponce Inlet.
There is a great deal of activity focused
around the peninsula tip and the Halifax River.
There are charter fishing boats, marinas,
restaurants, and a Sun Cruz Casino ship, which
allows guests all the fun of Las Vegas while still
providing a relaxing cruise.
Enjoy a peaceful atmosphere
steeped in tradition and natural beauty.
Come and visit Ponce Inlet.
